Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio; DeVon Ortiz starting dancing at 14 years old. During her high school years, she was a member of the Columbus Alternative High School Dance Company. Outside of school she was trained in Russian technique ballet, jazz, and tap at Theatre Street Dance Academy (TSDA) under the direction of China White, an Alumni of Dance Theatre of Harlem. While dancing at TSDA, DeVon performed in Amistad (opening act for Debbie Allen’s Chocolate Nutcracker). After high school, DeVon attended Ohio University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Hygiene in 2007 and a Master of Public Health in 2009. She continued taking dance classes and was a member of LOS DISCO (Ladies of Soul Dancing in Sync Company), where she performed at various university events. After graduating college, DeVon returned to Columbus and continued her training at TSDA for 2 more years. In 2012, she participated in Dance Your HART Out with For the Love of Dance (FTLOD) and enrolled in the company’s classes afterward. In 2013, DeVon joined FTLOD as the Young Star Program Assistant and is also currently the Creative Assistant undertaking stage design. She has performed in all of FTLOD’s performances since its inception. DeVon continues to enhance her training not only by taking classes locally but also out-of-state and through professional dance workshops. She has taken classes with The Washington Ballet, Maryland Youth Ballet, and Joy Of Motion Dance Center in Washington DC. Previous workshops consisted of: International choreographer, teacher, dancer, and talent manager Brandon Girouard; D(n)A Arts Collective with Founders Daisha Graf- professional hip-hop and R&B dancer and Alicia Graf Mack- lead dancer in the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre; and World Renowned Professional Choreographer Yanis Marshall. When DeVon is not dancing, teaching, or designing, she is working as an HIV Surveillance Epidemiologist with the Ohio Department of Health, monitoring HIV throughout the state.
