Julia Ayau began dancing at the age of four at Sweet Briar College’s youth dance school in Amherst, Virginia. During high school, she also trained at Seven Hills Dance Studio, Central Virginia Ballet, and the Virginia Governor’s School for Visual and Performing Arts. Julia received her BFA in Dance from the Department of Dance at The Ohio State University. During her college studies, she performed under choreographers Ann Sofie Clemmensen, Jimmy Ortiz, Michael Kelly Bruce, and Edward Taketa.
She had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica to learn from Jimmy Ortiz’s company in San José, and she also traveled to India to perform in several cities and learn from classical Indian dance gurus. Julia has also studied at Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles, the Doug Varone and Dancers company in New York, and she has studied classical Indian dance under esteemed Odissi performer Kaustavi Sarkar. Julia has choreographed for high school and collegiate show choir and musical groups, and she has presented work in student shows at The Ohio State University. She currently dances with the Kaustavi Movement Center, True Kingdom Mega Crew, and Hixon Dance Company. When Julia is not dancing, she teaches yoga at Yoga Six, Burn Within Yoga, and Centered Yoga and Movement.
